Tacos aren’t that tasty when the tortilla is cold and with a tougher texture. So warming it up is key. But what are the ways to warm up tortillas without ruining their integrity and their taste? There are ways to warm up tortillas. We have five for you!
The balance of a tortilla is kind of delicate. You want it to be warm, have a fresh flavor, and also give them a bit of a crispy edge. They wouldn’t be so complex and great without the crisp! A method that doesn’t quite cut it is warming two tortillas at a time in a heated skillet. Because the results are pretty good but incredibly time-consuming. Now that we know which is not the best way to do it, let’s see what ways to warm up tortillas work best!
Warming the tortillas is usually the last step when you’re preparing something like enchiladas, fajitas, or the wrap of your dreams. They only need a little heat to get softer and perfect for adding plenty of filling. Here are five ways to warm up tortillas!
5 ways to warm up tortillas
1. In the microwave
This is a great way to do it because you can warm up five at a time! Don’t forget to choose a microwave-ready plate. Cover them with a damp paper towel and then microwave them in 30-second bursts. Then, once these are warmed, do the other ones, in batches of five. You can also place a microwave safe glass of water in the microwave oven, next to the tortillas, and let the moisture slowly seep in.
2. In the oven
First, preheat the oven to 350 degrees F/180 degrees C. Then, while the oven is heating, wrap five tortillas in some aluminum foil and pop them in the oven for about 15 minutes. Check to see if they’re heated all the way through. If not, keep them there for 5 more minutes. Sure, you have to preheat the oven for this, but if you have space, you can do multiple 5-tortilla batches at a time.

3. On the stove-top
There are plenty of ways to do this on the stove-top as well. But they work best with fresh tortillas because stove-top heat tends to dry them out. Choose a stainless steel skillet and use no fat for this task, or you might burn the delicate tortillas. Cook them for about half a minute on each side.
If your tortillas are older, then add some moisture. Brush them with some water before warming them up.
4. In a wok
What’s great about a wok is that there is way more surface to work with than a simple skillet, so you can definitely warm up more tortillas at a time. You can add them to the walls and bottom of the wok, as many as you can fit in there. The wok gets hot all over its surface, so it works splendidly! Turn them over once or twice and you’re done with it!
5. On a grill
Of course, firing up a grill just to warm up tortillas isn’t very efficient. But if you happen to have an already fired-up grill, then why not pop them in there and let them heat up a little and get nice grill marks? Keep them as long as necessary and also make sure that you flip them once!
You can also use tongs to hold the tortillas over the coals, but make sure you don’t burn them!
