Sometimes, we just love to complicate our existence too much. And we overthink things and we pass on to the next generations these faulty ways we sometimes eat our food. But how about we become a bit more efficient? Here are the foods we should be eating better. And how!
I didn’t have many bananas as a kid, and I ate them all the same way. The way we actually all do if my observations on people around me are correct and could be set up as a sort of general rule. But about five years ago I read an article about how I’ve been eating my banana all wrong, man, and there’s actually an easier way I tried and loved. And now I’ve started to think about what other foods we should be eating better or at least simpler. And no surprise here, there are plenty of examples out there. Let’s begin.
5 foods you could be eating better
1. Bananas
I couldn’t live you hanging without revealing the greater and for some reason unknown way of eating a banana, right? Here it is! We as a species tend to just break open the banana at the stem end and then peel down the layers. But when you break the peel like that, you always get that blackish weird spot on top of the banana you always remove, right?
Well, let’s follow the example of monkeys, who know better than us humans! Flip the banana so that the nub is upwards. Use your thumb and index finger to push the nub a little and guess what: the peel splits open almost on its own. And you don’t have that blackish banana tip either.
2. Cupcakes
Sure, there’s an ongoing debate about how to eat cupcakes. Like do you just start with the frosting on top and then leave the last bite to just the fluffy portion? Or do you try to eat from the side and get that frosting all over your nose? It seems simple enough to eat, but that cake even caused fights among my friends about who is right on their proper cupcake eating technique.
And then, in all the madness, I found this amazing tip: make the cupcake into a frosting sandwich! Remove the liner from the cupcake, then use your fingers to break off some of the bottom of the cupcake and place it on top of the frosting. Now every bite will be sensational!
3. Apples
What did the core ever do to you? It’s actually pretty good to eat, and healthy, too. I mean, when you just bite around the core and then throw the leftovers out, you’re wasting a large portion of the apple. And I’ve had just about enough of food waste on this planet. So start from wherever you want, but eat it all. Except maybe for the stem, the stem is not that pleasant in the mouth.
4. Chicken Wings
And I am mostly referring to the ones with two bones, not the tiny drumstick ones. When you just bite into them around the bones, a lot of meat gets wasted. So here’s how to do it! Take the chicken wing and then pull off the cartilage on the wider end. Then find the end of the smaller bone inside the crunchy goodness. Twist it a little so that it can let go of the meat and then simply pull it out! What you’re left with is one single bone and all the meat in the wing! And boy, what tasty meat it is. I have to say it’s my favorite chicken meat because it’s so tender and juicy and it has a great flavor!
5. Cake
You know what the problem is with leftover cake when you cut wedges into it? It gets really dry when you store it in the fridge. And cake moisture is something that you should never lose. So I flipped out when I found this video on YouTube regarding the scientific method of cutting a cake.
Here’s what you should do for eating better: take your sharp trusty knife and cut into the cake one long line, near – but not in the exact – center. Then cut another parallel line to that, as thick as you want our slice. Do this for all of the next slices, but make sure you leave the two sides of the cake of similar size. When everyone has eaten a piece of cake, bring the two sides together and that’s how you store the cake in the fridge. Moisture and flavor remain in!
