1. Choose the best part of your refrigerator

You know, organizing your refrigerator can be quite the science. There are definitely rules for that – find them here. You can’t just throw your cheese on any shelf in your fridge. That goes double for the coldest parts of your refrigerator, avoid them at all costs. The best place to keep your cheese is the drawer where you keep your produce or any part that’s warmer than the rest.

This happens because cheese needs a bit of humidity to keep properly. And your dairy delight won’t deal well with too cold temperatures or the airflow in the refrigerator. The latter will make the cheese dry out very quickly.

2. Stay away from plastic

When storing cheese, make sure that it’s able to still have some breathing room. That’s why you should stay away from plastic wrap. What you need is some type of porous material like butcher paper, cheese paper, or wax paper. Another annoying thing that plastic wrap does is to change the flavor of the cheese, especially if you leave it wrapped in it for a long while.

Cheese is still sort of a living thing, thanks to the bacteria on it. And wrapping it in plastic won’t really be fantastic, because it slowly kills off the bacteria.

3. Know your more pretentious cheese

Pretentious when it comes to storing, that is. And I’m talking here about soft, semi-soft, and stinky cheeses. You should keep types of cheese like goat cheese, Camembert, Brie, and Limburger in a resealable plastic container. But take this other tip, too: poke some holes in the plastic container, because the cheese will still need some breathing room. (But not too much, ok?)
