A Harvard professor took the internet by storm a while ago by saying that a French fries serving should have… are you ready for this? Just. Six. Fries. Of course, nobody was pleased.
Is there anything more enticing and deliciously salty than French fries? It’s hard to tell, here I am writing this while gorging on a huge batch of golden, deep-fried, crunchy fries. I would eat them anytime, with anything. I know they’re a carby and greasy mess, but it’s still hard to let go of them. So what is this about only having six per serving?
I’m sure that nobody thinks fries are super healthy, but it’s still one of life’s pleasures. So having only six per serving seems like it’s depriving us of love. And sustenance. And sodium. (Probably too much sodium, if you as anybody that knows things)
French fries serving and the harsh reality
But Eric Rimm, a professor in the departments of epidemiology and nutrition at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health has shocked us all into reality by telling the New York Times that they’re “starch bombs”. Can we do anything to dismantle them? Not really!
A study published by The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2018 notes that potatoes have a high glycemic index that has been linked to an “increased risk of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease”. Which, fair enough. Add to that the oil we use to deep-fry it and it’s bad. But just six fries for one serving? That still seems like way too little.
The New York Times also mentioned that per the Agriculture Department, a serving of fries is 3 ounces (85 grams) or about 15 fries, which still seems like too little for the avid fries fan.
As for Dr. Rimm, his exact words were: “There aren’t a ton of people who are sending back three-quarters of an order of French fries. I think it would be nice if your meal came with a side salad and six French fries.” Make of that what you will. I know Twitter did.
