Have you ever had pizza for breakfast? Well, if you’re a fan of that, we have good news for you! A nutritionist told The Daily Meal that having that as your first meal of the day is most often more nutritious than having cereal.

But of course, there’s a catch. Chelsey Amer, MS, RDN, CDN, a nutritionist based in New York, said that “a slice of pizza contains more fat and much less sugar than most cold cereals, so you will not experience a quick sugar crash.” But that doesn’t mean that pizza for breakfast is a healthy option – just a more nutritious one.

And of course, it depends on the kind of cereal you’re having. If your favorites are just loaded with sugars, then your blood sugar levels are in trouble, perpetuating that classic sugar rush-sugar crash cycle we have been warned about so many times.

Your morning cereal might be lying to you, calorie-wise.

How often should you have pizza for breakfast?

There are types of breakfast cereal that contain about 18 grams of sugar – almost your daily allowance for the dangerous sweetener. While pizza, loaded with carbs, of course, is at least more sustaining over the day and you have a lower chance of cravings hitting you out of left field. The pizza pie is also usually richer in protein, so you get some of that as well. The nutritious value also depends on the toppings you choose and the kind of dough you prefer.

Don’t forget that just because this is a better option, that doesn’t mean it is a healthy option in and of itself. You shouldn’t have pizza for breakfast too often. Maybe just if you have leftovers from the previous night. There’s a caveat in this situation as well: make sure that when you have pizza leftovers you store them in the fridge because leaving them in your kitchen overnight can make them unhealthy for you.
