Red Velvet Cake Roll

These cake rolls are some of the easiest desserts to make, and they also look great when served. Especially when there are two colors involved, like in this red velvet cake roll. It's quite easy to make, and it looks even better when coated with sprinkles.

Ingredients

1 cup sugar
2 tablespoons of butter
1 egg
1 ½ cups of flour
2 teaspoons of red food coloring
colored sprinkles

Ingredients

Steps

1
Done

Add the sugar and butter in a large bowl.

2
Done

Set up your mixer at high speed and start mixing the butter and sugar. When the sugar is absorbed, add the egg and mix until smooth.

3
Done

Add the flour, and mix until the mixture is smooth, and has the aspect of crumbles.

4
Done

Use your hands and shape the dough, until firm and smooth. Give it a round shape, and slice it in halves.

5
Done

Grab one of the halves and place it in a bowl. Make room in the middle and pour the red food coloring.

6
Done

Mix with a tablespoon until all of the dough has a smooth red color.

7
Done

Cover the dough with foil and level it until smooth, using a rolling pin. Do the same with the separate dough.

8
Done

Place the dough pieces one on top of the other. Start from the end closest to you and roll towards the opposite end. Coat the dough with colored sprinkles and refrigerate it for the next couple of hours.

9
Done

Take the roll out of the fridge and slice it in 1/2 inch (1.2 cm) thick slices.

10
Done

Preheat the oven to 380 degrees F/190 degrees C.

11
Done

Line a baking dish with parchment paper and lay the slices on it.

12
Done

Slide the tray into the oven for the next 10 minutes.

I guess I’ve always had a passion for cooking ever since I was a kid when I was mom’s little helper in the kitchen. Even though I wasn’t actually cooking, I was a picky eater, and I focused on bringing more flavor to her dishes, by adding extra herbs and spices I felt might enrich it. Time has passed, and I haven’t changed that much: I am now my girlfriend’s helper.
