We all know what we usually serve during holiday feasts: it’s either a whole turkey or a yummy glazed ham, ready to be carved into and for the whole family to enjoy. But what if you’re sick of it? What else can you make? We have a whole selection of rebellious main course dishes for you to sink your forks into. Let’see what they are.

Sure, for many of us, there is a lot of comfort to be found in traditions and routine. But for some of us (like me), there comes a time when we need innovation, rule-breaking, new flavors and foods that melt in our mouths. So let’s explore some of these other options and see what you feel like eating during the holidays!

These work especially if you don’t have that many guests and you are trying to keep your kitchen workload a bit more manageable. And stress-free!

5 main course ideas for the holidays

1. Sweet and spicy roast chicken breast

Do you think that chicken meat is the blandest of them all? Well, rest assured this chicken breast is anything but bland. And the secret to that is the spicy marinade. Make it sweet with brown sugar and sour with soy sauce and balsamic vinegar. Serve this flavored meat with baked potatoes or with salad. The great thing about chicken is that it’s easier and faster to cook than other meats.

2. Roasted ginger and orange salmon

You can make this Asian-inspired salmon recipe all-season. Put your oven to good use and make this delicious dish. The flavors in this can capture anybody’s imagination. All you have to do to make it is to marinate the salmon with orange juice, sesame oil, ginger, and garlic. The citrus brings plenty of freshness, while the ginger packs a bit of a pleasant punch!

3. Red wine-marinated flank steak

Throw this flank steak on the grill only after marinating it for one hour in a mixture made of red wine, rosemary, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic powder. This way the meat turns tender and juicy! This is festive, delicious, yet simple and effective!

4. Bacon-wrapped duck breast

Have you considered duck as the main course for your holiday dinner? Prepare yourself for a sophisticated dish. It’s meaty and hearty, and quite decadent. Sear the bacon-wrapped duck breast, taking care to flavor it with garlic, olive oil, and rosemary. Then bake it. For a buttery sweet side, caramelize nectarine wedges.

5. Coriander rack of lamb with potatoes

How about some tender and juicy lamb ribs? Coat them with coriander and fennel and sear the meat a little before bake it with tomatoes, red bell peppers, and potatoes. Complement the spiced lamb tang with refreshing parsley and lemon. The meat will just melt off the bone and be so tender and flavorful.
