White Meat Linked to Cancer for the First Time

We’ve all repeatedly heard the bad news concerning the link between red meat and cancer. The World Health Organization has warned us about it. But now, new research from Oxford University suggests that white meat could also raise the risk of getting cancer. 

The study was published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health. Researchers from Oxford University tracked 475,000 middle-aged Britons, over a period of eight years, between 2006 and 2014. Scientists looked at the diets of the participants but also their diseases and illnesses. Out of these, about 23,000 were later diagnosed with cancer.

„Poultry intake was positively associated with risk for malignant melanoma, prostate cancer and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma”, according to the paper published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.

White meat linked to Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma cases

The researchers found a connection between eating white meat and an increased risk for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a type of cancer that originates in the lymphatic system. This system is actually the disease-fighting part of your body.

The same study also found a connection between the consumption of white meat and an increased risk for getting malignant melanoma and prostate cancer in men.
