Don’t panic, but also be as careful as possible. There might be contaminated baby food on the market, according to a report.
The report found dozens of contaminated baby food products, Associated Press reports. The contamination comes from all kinds of metals, including lead. After reading the report, Senator Chuck Schumer, the Senate’s top Democrat urges the Food and Drug Administration to examine the situation. Schumer said that the FDA must take action to regulate the baby food industry.
Contaminated baby food: 95 percent of products tested
The report was compiled by Healthy Babies Bright Futures. It tested 168 baby foods and it found heavy metals in 95 percent of them.
To be more specific, Healthy Babies Bright Futures found the presence of lead, cadmium, arsenic, and mercury. According to the report, one in four baby foods that they tested contained all four of these heavy metals.
Schumer, New York senator, said that consumers “rightfully expect those foods to be undeniably safe, appropriately regulated and nutritiously sustaining.” He also thinks that federal regulators should look at the study and then inform the public by releasing a statement about their findings.
