Ways to Eat Waffles

Ah, waffles! Tell me a person who doesn’t love them! Warm and soft on the inside, a bit crunchy on the outside, topped with lots of chocolate spread and whipped cream! I must admit that I have a weakness for this combo. But the truth is there are many ways to eat waffles, including topped with savory ingredients.

My mother used to make waffles pretty often when I was a child. I remember her making the batter, poured it on our old waffle iron, closed the machine and put it on the stovetop flame. After a few minutes, I had the most delicious breakfast on my plate – a big waffle waiting to be devoured.

I think cooking delicious meals and desserts is one of the best things a mom can do for her children, besides loving them, of course!

A brief history of waffles

A waffle is defined by its shape: the honeycomb. Waffles are eaten throughout the world, particularly in Belgium, which has over a dozen regional varieties. The Belgian waffle made its first American appearance at the 1962 World’s Fair in Seattle. But that wasn’t the first waffle’s appearance.

In the late 14th century, the first known waffle recipe was penned in an anonymous manuscript, Le Ménagier de Paris, written by a husband as a set of instructions to his young wife, according to Wikipedia. The manuscript contained four recipes, but all are a variation of the first: “Beat some eggs in a bowl, season with salt, and add wine. Toss in some flour, and mix. Then fill, little by little, two irons at a time with as much of the paste as a slice of cheese is large. Then close the iron and cook both sides. If the dough does not detach easily from the iron, coat it first with a piece of cloth that has been soaked in oil or grease”.

Basic waffle recipe

The most important thing when making waffles is the waffle maker. Then you have to know the recipe. A basic one requires 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, 3 teaspoons of baking powder, 2 tablespoons of white sugar, 2 eggs, 1 1/2 cups of warm milk, 1/3 cup of melted butter, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.

Preheat the waffle iron. In a large bowl, sift together the flour, salt, baking powder, and sugar. Set them aside. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs. Then, stir in the milk, butter, and vanilla. Pour the milk and butter mixture into the flour mixture, and mix until blended.

Using a ladle, pour the batter into the preheated waffle iron. Cook the waffles until they’re golden and crisp. Put the hot waffles on paper towels at first, because otherwise, they get soggy. Serve them hot, warm, or chilled, depending on your toppings. These quantities should be enough for 4 servings.

Cooked waffles can be frozen and heated up in the toaster. Unused batter mixture can be kept in a container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.

10 Ways to eat waffles

1.  Waffles with Eggs Florentine, bacon and cheese

Who says a waffle should be sweet? Nobody! So, to make bacon and cheese waffles, prepare batter according to the recipe, but omit the sugar and vanilla extract. Instead, add chopped fried bacon (4 slices) and shredded cheddar cheese (1/2 cup).

Cook some baby spinach with a few drops of olive oil, salt, and pepper in a nonstick pan over medium-high heat. Then, make the poached eggs. One egg for serving. Assemble the waffles: place the spinach in the center of each waffle, and top it with a poached egg. Finish with hollandaise sauce (homemade or store-bought).

2. Peanut butter waffle sandwich

This one is simple! Just spread some peanut butter on one waffle and top it with another to make a sandwich. If your waffles are cold, you can put them in the waffle maker again, after you assemble each sandwich. When warm, cut them into sticks (thin slices). Then, have your guests and dip them in maple or chocolate syrup. Everyone will be happy!

3. Waffle skewers

When topped with whipped cream and fruits, waffles are delicious. If you have guests or plan a brunch, try this classic combo with a small twist – serve it on skewers to make things more interesting! Cut the waffles into small pieces, they can be triangles or squares, depending on your preference. Add a bit of whipped cream on each piece of waffle. Take a skewer and add one piece of waffle then one of your favorite fruit. I suggest strawberries. Alternate between waffle pieces and strawberry slices, beginning and ending with waffles. It’s simple to make but eye-catching!

4. Pizza waffles

There are different shapes of waffle makers and different ways to eat waffles. You can even buy an animal-shaped waffle maker in the form of an elephant, giraffe or monkey. Still, the common waffle makers are square or round in shape, and each can be split into 4 individual waffles.

It doesn’t really matter the form of your waffle maker, you can try this idea of pizza waffles with any machine! If you have children around, they’ll be pleased for sure! Just spread tomato sauce and shredded mozzarella on your waffles, then add your favorite toppings, and put them in the preheated oven for a few minutes just until the toppings cook a little!

5. Brie and blueberry grilled waffles

Besides the classic waffle recipe ingredients, you need butter, Brie cheese, and blueberry jam, or compote. Place 3-4 slices of Brie on 4 waffles and top them with a generous scoop of blueberry jam or compote. Top them with 4 other waffles to make 4 sandwiches. Heat the butter in a skillet over medium-high heat, then place the sandwiches in a skillet and grill them, flipping them once, until the waffles are golden in color and the cheese is completely melted, about 2-3 minutes per side.

6. Bacon and beer waffle cake

Don’t stick to the classic ways to eat waffles, if you feel the need for an upgrade! You can find many beer waffle recipes, but the simplest way to make them is to replace milk with beer in the classic recipe. You can remove or keep the vanilla extract. Chop some fried bacon and add it to the batter just before starting to cook the waffle. You can serve them as is, or with extra bacon. Some add maple syrup for a bit of sweet touch!

7. Ice cream waffle sandwich

Just put one scoop of your favorite ice cream on one waffle. Before you top it with another waffle to make a sandwich, you can add chocolate chips, strawberry or banana slices, crushed pistachio or a sweet syrup. It’s better if you have different flavors of ice cream in your freezer. You can also use sorbet.

8. Waffle fondue

This is simple and you should try it at least once! You can use a fondue maker or simply melt some chocolate and heavy cream in a pan, on medium heat. Then, cut the waffles into medium pieces and serve them with the chocolate fondue while it’s still warm and creamy. You can also try cheese fondue.

9. Waffle snack mix

This snack is a waffle and popcorn combo. Make some air-popped popcorn in the microwave. Meanwhile, butter two waffles. You can use frozen or fresh waffles. Preheat the oven and roast them for a couple of minutes, to make them crispy on the outside. Then, chop them up into little pieces and put them in a big mixing bowl. Add the air-popped popcorn to the same bowl.

Add white chocolate in a saucepan over medium heat and melt it. When melted, add some peanut butter and stir them together. Pour this warm mixture over the waffles and popcorn. If you want, add some sprinkles all over, and mix to add a touch of chocolate to every bite. It’s a caloric snack, but you can indulge from time to time.

10. Raw vegan waffles

You should consider alternative ways to eat waffles if you have a raw-vegan diet! The recipe is different, but tastes super good! You’ll need 1 1/2 cups of flax powder, 1 1/2 cups of pecan nuts (finely crushed), and 3 cups of soaked buckwheat. Mix the ingredients in a big bowl, then use a mixer or a blender to form the dough.

You’ll use a waffle maker, but you won’t need heat. Cover the bottom of your waffle maker with plastic wrap, spoon in a bit of dough and spread it evenly with your hands, making sure it covers the entire waffle iron. Lay plastic wrap across the top side of your waffle and press the sides of the waffle iron together firmly to achieve a nice waffle pattern on both sides. Remove the plastic-wrapped waffle from the machine, take off the plastic, and lay the waffles on a dehydrator tray. Dehydrate for 8 hours at 110 degrees F/43 degrees C. Serve them with fruit, raw chocolate sauce, cashew frost, or any other raw topping.
