When you forget to taste your strawberries before buying them – or you can’t taste them – you don’t have to throw them out and waste money and time. There are still ways you can maximize their flavor and get the most out of bland strawberries.

One of the best, almost no prep needed desserts I can have is a big bowl of fresh strawberries. Just the sight of them, with the red intense color, the shape and the tiny seeds sprinkled on them, not to mention the green stem that looks like a hat tend to make me happy. I will have them with some whipped cream or vanilla ice cream and it’s such a simple treat to have. I’m sure it has happened to all of us: you get some at the market and then you find yourself with a batch of bland strawberries in your kitchen. It’s very frustrating, isn’t it? But just because that happens, it doesn’t mean that they’re a waste of money, because there are some tips and tricks you can apply to them to get the most of their taste.

5 tips and tricks to sweeten bland strawberries

1. Mix them with something creamy

Just a bit of whipped cream or chocolate cream can actually improve your bland strawberries by association. The creamy ingredients can bring on the sweetness, while the strawberries add to the mix with their lovely, delicate texture. Sure, that adds on to the calories in the meal and takes away from the healthy aspect of the fruit, but a treat is a treat.

2. Bake them in

The bland strawberries might not be too tasty in a bowl, but if you add them to baked goods, the situation changes dramatically. The heat and the sugar necessary for baking both bring out the sweetness in the fruit.

There are so many things you can bake with strawberries! You can make some delicious muffins with them. You can add them to the batter for pancakes or in between the layers and frosting of a layer cake. That way, the berries will definitely pick up more flavor.

3. Jam them

A nice strawberry jam is what bland berries were basically invented for! Not only does the jam-making process involve heat and sugar, but the texture of the strawberries is amazing for a nice jam. You only need a bit of lemon juice and you can swap out the sugar for your other favorite sweetener. That’s how you can go for a healthier version of the product.

4. Roast them

Roasted strawberries? Why yes, it is a distinct possibility. And the great thing is that this way the strawberries don’t need any additional sugar. The heat emanated by the oven (at about 350 degrees F/176 degrees C) helps concentrate the natural sweetness in the fruit. Cook them for about 20 minutes and their flavor will be richer, and the texture will be softer. You can have them warm or you can let them chill. Use them as toppings for your pancakes, your oats, or your ice-cream.

5. Just add sugar

Also, you can try some simple brown sugar on top, just like one of my great aunties used to do it when I was a kid. Just a tablespoon of sugar sprinkled over the strawberries will maximize their flavor profile. Chop or slice the fruit, whatever suits you best, add the sugar, stir everything, and leave the fruit to macerate for 10 minutes.
