If you’re having a Christmas party this year, you can’t go wrong with some traditional drinks to go with it. If you’re looking for a traditional item, learn how to make eggnog right now. This one definitely has alcohol in it, so it’s really not for children!

OK, I said this is not for children, but I have to confess that one of my secret guilty pleasures when I was little, was to sip some eggnog when my parents were having a party. I liked the smoothness, the thickness and that little punch it had when I drank. Years passed by and it’s really not taboo anymore for me. Especially since being an adult means I can do whatever I want (even though that’s not really true either).

How to make eggnog in 9 easy steps

1. Gather your ingredients

You can make eggnog easily if you have some eggs, milk, and sugar in your fridge. Prepare 6 eggs, 1 cup of sugar, 2 cups of milk (make it whole fat, ok?), 1 cup of cream, and as much alcohol as you like. I usually go for some rum, about 1 cup, but you can also choose bourbon, cognac, or brandy.

Give it that extra spiciness by preparing some nutmeg for serving, about 1/2 teaspoon, 4-5 cloves, 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon, and maybe vanilla extract. You can mix and match these to your liking.

2. Separate the eggs

This is the time to separate the yolks from the egg whites. Use two bowls for that.

3. Spice up the milk

Put the milk in a saucepan and add the vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg to it.

4. Bring spicy milk to a boil

Heat over low heat for a few minutes. Bring this to a boil, slowly.

5. Whisk the yolks

Add the sugar to the yolk bowl and whisk them together. You can use a mixer or a simple whisk. The idea is to get a smooth, creamy, and light-colored mixture.

6. Add the milk mixture

Sieve the milk mixture into the yolk mixture and blend.

7. Heat up

Add the nog mixture to the saucepan and cook over medium heat. The mixture should end up as thick as you want it. Cook for about 3 minutes. Take off the stove.

8. Add the other ingredients

Blend in the cream and the alcoholic drink of your choice.

9. Refrigerate

Make this the night before you want to serve it. And keep it in the refrigerator overnight.
