How to Make Breadcrumbs

Breaded foods are amazing – crispy, golden and extra tasty! But why buy them in the store when you can make them yourself, easily, at home? Here’s how to make breadcrumbs for all your schnitzel-related needs!

There are so so many recipes that call for a cup of breadcrumbs. There are plenty on our website you can use to inspire you. But how to make breadcrumbs when you don’t want to get them at the store? It’s an easy process – especially if you have a food processor.

I’ve actually bought breadcrumbs more times than I can remember. And I’ve used them for so many things! They’re amazing as a filler for meatloaf. They can be used to bread all types of meats (along with flour and eggs). They coat those golden crunchy fish fingers or cheese balls. And if you’re making a casserole, you can sprinkle them on top and see what great results you get!

My boyfriend loves it when I cook schnitzels at home. But if I am spending time in the kitchen, why not spend some extra minutes and make some breadcrumbs, too? It’s honestly the best way to make sure that I am aware of what I use in my food.

How to make breadcrumbs in 8 easy steps

1. Gather your ingredients

You will need about four slices of bread, but make sure it isn’t stale. If the bread is too old, your breadcrumbs will also taste old. And can I just say “Blechh!” to that? Nobody wants to have food that tastes like stale bread.

The bread can be any type you want – whole wheat is better than white bread, for sure! You can even use multiple types of bread.

As for equipment, you will need a food processor, an oven tray and a knife!

2. Remove the crusts

Use the knife to remove the crusts from the bread slices.

3. Cut the pieces of bread

Cut all the slices of bread into long sticks. It’s great if they have similar sizes, but don’t stress too much over that. You don’t need perfect symmetry.

4. Preheat the oven

Heat the oven to 375 degrees F/190 degrees C.

5. Toast the breadsticks

Place the bread sticks on an oven tray lined with parchment paper. And then pop the tray in the oven.

6. Cook the bread

Toast the bread in the oven for about five minutes, or until they are golden brown. Keep an eye on them, because they cook quickly.

7. Remove from the oven and cool

After you’ve removed the bread from the oven, it’s important to let the sticks cool off, because when warm, they’re very mushy! When the breadsticks cool off, they will also harden a little.

8. Process the bread

Run the cooled breadsticks through the food processor. If you don’t have one, then you can use a bread knife to “process” the breadsticks.
