There are so many foods that are said to be beauty-boosting foods, but a lot of them are trendy items, like kale and coconut water. A lot of people seem to ignore the beauty benefits of radishes, a food that works amazing for all of your body, but especially your skin.
This crunchy edible root vegetable can sometimes be easily ignored. I know I did, for many years. But lately I’ve noticed it right back and it all began with some photos I saw at my grandparents’ house. When I was in kindergarten, I was in a small play about the “Giant Radish”, which needed to be pulled out the ground by a mother, a father, a child, and the two grandparents. I played the mother back then. And seeing the pictures of the event, I started to crave radishes instantly.
And the craving was definitely a positive one since the beauty benefits of radishes are enough to pique my interest. The general health benefits are not to be ignored either: radishes detoxify the body, ease digestion, soothe urinary problems, help with your blood sugar levels and might even protect against some type of cancers.
Radishes have been around for a long time, but they’re still a sort of mystery for scientists who aren’t sure where they originated. Greeks and Romans were using them by the third century B.C., but wild forms of the plant have been also found in Southeast Asia.
The raw, crunchy, white on the inside, red on the outside, the edible root is full of vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients. They help nourish, hydrate and protect the skin from the more dangerous elements in our environment.
5 beauty benefits of radishes
1. Cleansing effect
Radishes have a high-water content which prevents dry skin. And you can make your own face cleanser from radishes, at home. Blend the peeled radishes and then strain their precious juice. You can mix it with some citrus juice and then rub it over your face. The result? Clean and fresh skin.
2. Unclogging your pores
If you’re cursed with clogged pores and the stuff you buy at the store doesn’t help you that much, maybe radishes are the ideal cure for you. Try some black or white radish juice or pulp that you mix with some honey. Apply the mixture to your face and let the cleansing of the pores begin!
3. Younger skin
This edible root has two ingredients ripe for glowing, healthy skin: vitamin C and vitamin A. One cup of radishes gives you about 30 percent of the daily recommended amount for vitamin C. And what does this vitamin do for you? It firms and tightens your skin while protecting it from all kinds of environmental factors. Vitamin A encourages healthy skin cell production and also stimulates fibroblasts—the cells responsible for developing tissue that keeps skin firm and healthy—in the deep layers of your skin.
4. So much hydration
As we said, radishes have a high content of water, which nourishes your skin, but also the rest of your body. Another factor that helps your body absorb the water? Radishes contain both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which push the moisture deep into your skin layers. That means deep hydration, not just on the surface.
5. Brighten your skin
Thanks to the vitamins C and A, but other compounds as well, radishes can help you have a brighter, glowing-with-health skin. Use them to great effects with the help of a moisturizing mask. Just mix the blended radishes to some yogurt, for a creamier, cooler texture.
How to eat more radishes
The beauty benefits of radishes work great when the roots are applied to your skin in cleansers or face masks. But they also work when you simply eat them. Especially since one cup of radishes only has about 19 calories. So how can you have more? You can eat them sliced (even with skins on) as snacks. Sometimes I replace chips with slices of radish.
You can add them to your salad because their texture goes so great with lettuce, tomatoes, and bell peppers. They work in risottos or roasted in the oven. You can pickle them or grate them and toss them in your coleslaw.
